Teamwork: The Key to Success

If I were to ask you, “Are your teams and their ability to work together a vital part of your company’s success?” you would probably nod your head right away and agree that yes, teams and teamwork are an essential part of achieving company goals.

But when it comes down to it, how much time do you actually invest in making sure your teams are working well together? Teamwork is a skill that has to be learned and continually built upon. It is important to periodically take a hard look at your teams to uncover areas of improvement and think about how to progress.

Is My Team Cohesive?

The first step is to observe and determine their strengths and weaknesses. Each team will have a combination, though some will be more cohesive while others more dysfunctional.

Here are a few things to pay attention to within your teams and company culture:

  • Teams spend their time protecting themselves and their jobs from each other because of politicking, back-stabbing, and internal competition.
  • Teams built on unhealthy competition, lacking trust, and seeing poor results.
  • Teams with high turnover rates and those that are pessimistic, selfish, and unaccountable.

Teams with these characteristics ultimately cost the company because of their lack of productivity and growth. They are unable to focus on performing because they are more worried about safeguarding or competing against colleagues.

Here are some attributes a healthy cohesive team should have:

  • Trust
  • Healthy conflict around ideas
  • Transparency
  • A focus on goals
  • Optimism
  • A healthy learning environment
  • Support from team members and management
  • Direct, honest, and open communication

Creating a More Cohesive Team

Now that you know what to look for and what to avoid, it is time to get to work on your own teams. When it comes to creating a more cohesive environment, it is essential to plan ahead. If you’re overeager and plan the first team-building activity that pops up in a Google search, you may be missing out on a great opportunity to truly help your employees come together and learn vital skills.

It is crucial to take the time to examine exactly what your team needs so you can solve the problem and remain on the road to success. Think about what is holding your team back from being cohesive. Is it communication? Lack of trust? Ego-driven goals? Each of these problems has a unique solution and finding the right team-building activity will help you focus on the root problem.

The Road to Success

Teamwork is a vital key to achieving success. We encourage you to take the time to reflect on your team’s strengths, weaknesses, and needs. You could even interview a few team members and ask for their honest feedback to get a better reading on what needs improvement.

It may take time and effort, but it is more than worth it. Often, people believe that employees leave because of undesirable pay or benefits.   The reality is that they often choose to leave because of poor management and toxic work cultures. Cultivating a strong, supportive environment not only helps your teams reach their goals but also helps the company attract and retain strong employees.

We’ll leave you with a few inspiring words from Patrick Lencioni, author of “The Five Dysfunctions of a Team.”

“Not finance. Not strategy. Not technology. It is teamwork that remains the ultimate competitive advantage, both because it is so powerful and so rare. If you could get all the people in an organization rowing in the same direction, you could dominate any industry, in any market, against any competition, at any time.”

As always, we are here to help with any and all team-building activities. From team adventures to team culture consulting, we are able to help you strengthen your teams so you achieve success and reach your goals.
